Q. Can I use memory from other desktops in the SPARCstation 5?
A. No. The SPARCstation 5 uses new industry standard Jedec memory SIMMs
that are specific to the SPARCstation 5.
Q. Does the memory need to added in pairs, like the SPARCstation LX?
A. No. Memory is available in 8 MB and 32 MB SIMMS and can be added
individually and you can mixed different densities. There are 8 SIMM
slots allowing for a maximum of 256 MB of memory.
Q. How many internal peripherals can the SPARCstation 5 accomodate?
A. Four internal peripherals. 2 disks, CD-ROM and a floppy.
The base system will include one disk, the remaining peripherals
are optional.
Q. Is there graphics on the mother board?
A. No. Graphics requires an SBus slot (ZX requires 2 slots)
Q. What is the resolution of the 15-inch color monitor?
A. On the SPARCstation 5 the 15-inch monitor resolution is 1152 x 900,
and the graphics card is CG3 based.
Q. What is the difference between the the 17-inch and the 16-inch monitors?
A. Compared to the 16-inch premium
1. The physical design. 17-inch is bigger.
2. Captive cable. Both have captive cables.
3. Performance. The 17-inch has better performance.
4. Resolutions: no 1280 x 1024 on the 16-inch midrange
Compared to the 16-inch premium
1. The physical design of the units. The new 17-inch is
bigger and takes up more volume. This may mean custom
enclosures cannot be used
2. Captive cable. The new 17-inch has a video cable integrated
into the display. This means that customers using their
own cables will have to redesign them because of gender
differences
3. Performance. No difference. They are both premium
4. Resolutions: 1280x1024@ 66Hz only for the 16-inch
1280x1024@ 76Hz as well for the 17-inch
Q. Will SPARCstation 5 run on Solaris 1.x, Solaris 2.2, or
Solaris 2.3?
A. No. SPARCstation 5 requires the new Solaris 2.3 Edition II
platform-specific release or 1.1.1 Version B.
Q. If my customer wants to run their SPARCstation 5 or SPARCserver(TM) 5
with Solaris 1.1.1 Version B instead of Solaris 2.3 Edition II
what must they order?
A. SPARCstation 5 and SPARCserver 5 only include a Solaris 2.x
license. If a customer wants to run Solaris 1.1.1 Version B,
they will need a System License and Media.
Order SC-P> (US), SC-E1-P (Europe), SC-46-P (Japan), SC-47-P
(China), SC-44-P (Taiwan), or SC-45-P (Korea).
Q. Is an "Upgrade" from Solaris 1.x/2.x to Solaris 2.3 Edition II
offered?
A. No. Since Solaris 2.3 Edition II is a new, platform-specific release
for the new SPARCstation 5, SPARCserver 5, and SPARCstation
Voyager(TM) machines, there should be no need for "upgrades".
Q. Will I need a license upgrade for my existing 2.x servers to allow
support of the new SPARCstation 5, SPARCserver 5, and
SPARCstation Voyager machines?
A. The use of Solaris 2.3 Edition II in a server environment is
covered by the standard Solaris 2.x server license which allows
users to run "the latest version of 2.x available when the
system shipped". From a licensing point of view, Solaris 2.3
Edition II is technically still Solaris 2.3. Thus, servers
that shipped with Solaris 2.3 will also be licensed to run
Solaris 2.3 Edition II. Solaris 1.x servers will require
the Single-Server 2.x Upgrade License (SOLS-LF).
Q. Why is a platform-specific release of Solaris required?
A. Solaris 2.3 Edition II is required to support the new features
of the SPARCstation 5, such as 16-bit audio, and the microSPARC-II
architecture.
Q. What are the technical differences between Solaris 2.3 and
Solaris 2.3 Ed. II?
A. Solaris 2.3 Edition II uses Solaris 2.3 as a base, then ADDs
functionality. The hardware-independent Solaris 2.3 code is
unchanged. Thus, Edition II OFFERS ALL THE SAME FEATURES,
FUNCTIONS, and 1.X APPLICATIONS BINARY COMPATIBILITY as
Solaris 2.3, but adds the following:
- Support for new SPARCstation 5, SPARCserver 5, and
SPARCstation Voyager features
- Integrated "8-bit character patch" (Patch ID 101381-01
and 101468-01) to allow the "C" locale to support 8-bit
characters for OpenWindows text I/O
Q. What configurations will the Solaris 2.3 Edition II Media Kit
be offered in?
A. Solaris 2.3 will be offered as a Desktop configuration only.
There are no server, upgrade, source, SDK, or DDK configurations
offered at this time.
Q. What locales are supported in Solaris 2.3 Edition II?
A. Solaris 2.3 Edition II Media Kits are available for US (English),
Japanese, Italian, German, and Swedish. There are no Asian or
Spanish localizations available at this time.
Q. My customer was a Solaris 2.3 Edition II Early Access 2 (i.e. Beta)
site. How will he/she receive an upgrade to the FCS version of
Solaris 2.3 Edition II?
A. Customers who submitted a Sales Order for their EA2 SPARCstation 5
hardware and Solaris 2.3 Edition II software will automatically
receive a no-cost FCS version of Solaris 2.3 Edition II.
