MBUS
there are no processors directly on the motherboard
CPU's are 1 or 2 per MBUS module
there is a max of 2 MBUS modules per SS10 system
speed is 320MB per second peak and 95MB sustained
MBUS is a SPARC International spec.
Super SPARC is the TI processor we use
PROCESSOR
Texas Instruments Super SPARC
Super SPARC or Viking is a super scalar
implementation of SPARC that follow Version 8
what this means is that it can execute more then
1 instruction per clock cycle
Viking has 20KB of instruction cache on-board
Viking has 16KB of data cache on-board
Viking has an optional external cache of 1 MB
Model 30 is the only processor that does not have
the external 1 MB cache
Cypress, 40 MHz (ROSS Modules 120 & 140)
40 MHz; 28.5 MIPS (ROSS Modules 120 & 140)
FPU
TI8847 40Mhz 4.2 Megaflops (ROSS Modules 120 & 140)
Model 41 at 40 MHz, (1 processor) external cache
Model 52 at 45 MHz, (2 processors) external cache
Model 54 at 45 MHz, (4 processors) external cache
MMU
Viking (Models 41, 52 & 54 ) support 64,000 contexts
Viking supports V8 of the SPARC
Reference MMU spec
This allows for QUAD Precision 128 bits also
CACHE
Model 41 at 40 MHz, (1 processor) 1MB external cache
Model 41 20KB of instruction and 16KB of data cache on-board
Model 52 at 45 MHz, (2 processors) 1MB external cache
Model 52 20KB of instruction and 16KB of data cache on-board
Model 54 at 45 MHz, (4 processors) 1MB external cache
Model 54 20KB of instruction and 16KB of data cache on-board
SBUS
there are 4 SBUS slots available on the 600 board
only 3 are available if you have a 4 processor system
the reason for this is the second MBUS module sits
over the fourth SBUS slot
sustained thruput is 30 to 50MBs per second
The reason for SBUS on the 600 series is to
take advantage of the large # of SBus Cards
On a 514 you loose TWO of the SBus slots
because of the size of the processor modules
Clock is 20MHz
CPU 32 byte burst transfers in 11 clock cycles =
58MB/sec
DVMA 32 byte burst transfers in 12 clock cycles =
53MB/sec
MEMORY
max memory is 128MB (4 SIMMS) OR 512MB (16MB SIMMS)
There are two memory banks of 16 slots each
expansion memory cards are not supported
MONITOR
optional; color 16" and 19"; 19" monochrome
PACKAGE
56" 16 slot cabinet; VME bus; 22MB/sec bandwidth
PERIPHERALS
1/4" tape, 1/2" tape, IPI disks, CD-ROM
PORTS
2 RS232/423 ports on cpu board
1 SCSI, 1 ethernet, 1 JTAG
TAPE
tape is 150MB SCSI 1/4" tape
Front Load 6250/1600/800 HP tape drive
also can accommodate 2.3 GB 8mm
DISK
This is the initial max on the 630
26 GB of SCSI Disk capacity using 1.3 GB SCSI
up to 1.3GB of SCSI in the main cabinet
the expansion rack can have up to 10.4GB
there is max of three expansion racks
the absolute max is 20 SCSI drives on the 630
up to 4 SBus SCSI host adapter with 4 drives
on each and 4 on the motherboard SCSI host adapter
the 1.3's have a seek time of 11.5ms and transfer
at 3 to 4.5MB per second using ZBR (zone bit
recording)
SCSI
CD-ROM comes standard; up to 3 5 1/4" devices
The current max is 41GB - using 2.1
This is calculated:
(2) DSCSI Expansion pedestals 16.8GB each (33.6GB Total)
using (8) 2.1GB DSCSI's per pedestal
all 4 SBus slots are used with (2) DSCSI Expansion pedestals
this is because you can not go from one tray to the bottom
there is a limit of 4 DSCSI's to the DSBE in this scenario
There is always a cdrom in the 630
we can connect 6 (1 internal 5 external ) 1.3's (7.8GB
Total )
This takes us to the 41 GB max (41.4 actual )
BUS
VME bus
1 9u VME slot is available
2 6u VME slots are available
OPERATING SYSTEM
4.1.2 was the first release for the 120 and 140 models
4.1.2 has 4.1.1 binary compatibility
SOLARIS 2.0 is available as of June 29, 1992
SOLARIS 2.0 will be SVR4/MT (multi-threaded)
4.1.3 is the the first release for Model 41
SOLARIS 2.x will be available in winter 92
at this point you will be able to add a second
processor module ie a Model 52 and/or 54
It is important to tell your customer that in
order to transition to multiple Vikings (Model 52 or 54)
you MUST also transition to Solaris 2.x
UPGRADES
customers who have 4/330, 4/370, 4/390
4/470 or 4/490 can board level upgrade
to the new 4/600 systems
all 911 and 1GB IPI drives are supported
as well as 1/2" tape, SCSI disk and 1/4" drives
and 2.3GB 8mm tape drives
qualified 300 series SIMMS are supported
from both 370 and 390 systems
Below are examples of MBus upgrades
